In 1963, the Equal Pay Act was signed into law, yet women still earn significantly less than men while performing the same or substantially similar work. And despite California having some of the toughest equal pay laws in the entire nation, female workers in the Golden State still earn less than their male counterparts.

Gender Pay Gap Statistics and Facts

Women are paid 20% less than men.

American women working full-time were paid 80 percent of what men were paid in 2015. Wyoming has the biggest gender pay gap, where women earn just 64 percent of what men earn. Additionally, women working in the Golden State earn 86 percent of what men make, on average, due to California’s tough equal pay laws.

The gender pay gap grows as women get older.

Until they turn 35, women earn about 90 percent of what men earn. After that, the median earnings for American women are between 76 and 81 percent of what men are paid.

Pay inequality adversely affects working mothers.

On average, working moms’ earnings are reduced by 7 percent per child. This is primarily due to the need to take unpaid leave to care for children and family. It has been proven that when working moms have access to paid family leave, they are more apt to return to their previous employer after giving birth.

More education isn’t effective in combating the issue of pay inequality.

Even in highly-skilled professions, women’s median earnings are less than men’s. For example, male ophthalmologists reported making about $95,000 more per year than female ophthalmologists, according to a recent study by Doximity.
