Workplace Discrimination: EEOC Charge Statistics for 2015

1.) 89,385: The total number of workplace discrimination charges filed with the EEOC in 2015.

Even though the amount of workplace discrimination claims filed with the agency in 2015 increased slightly (7%) from the previous year, claims are still much lower than they were compared to some prior years (2010 - 2012) where charges reached nearly 100,000.

2.) 44.5%: The percentage of claims filed involving employer retaliation allegations.

In addition to this statistic, employer retaliation claims that stemmed only from employees alleging Title VII violations totaled 31,893.

3.) 34.7%: The percentage of claims filed in 2015 alleging race discrimination.

The number of race discrimination charges filed with the EEOC in 2015 held fairly steady from the previous year, where they made up 35% of all discrimination claims.

4.) 5%: Employer retaliation charges increased this much from the previous year.

Retaliation in the workplace was once again the most frequently filed charge of workplace discrimination, with 39,757 charges in 2015. The EEOC is currently seeking public input on its proposed update of enforcement guidance addressing employer retaliation and related issues.

5.) 6%: Disability discrimination charges increased this much from the previous year.

Unfortunately, this is a record-high, with 26,968 disability discrimination claims filed with the EEOC, representing 30.2% of total charges.

But there is some good news for workplace discrimination victims...

6.) Workplace discrimination victims received $525 million in 2015.

The EEOC secured this amount of money for employees who faced discrimination in private, state and local government, and federal workplaces.

7.) The EEOC also helped workers obtain 15,000 resolutions of workplace discrimination charges.

This highlight from 2015 was accomplished through the agency's administrative processes-settlements, mediations, and conciliations, and includes 268 resolutions of systemic investigations, obtaining more than $33.5 million in remedies.
