LGBT Discrimination in the Workplace Statistics

1.) Only 21 states offer employment nondiscrimination laws to LGBT workers.

These states are the only ones that have laws covering both sexual orientation and gender identity protections to prevent discrimination of LGBT employees.

2.) Transgender employees can be fired due to their gender identity in 31 states.

Because 51% of the American LGBT population live in states that do not prohibit employment discrimination based on gender identity, employees can be fired simply because they identify as transgender.

3.) 78% of transgender individuals have been subjected to workplace harassment.

According to a 2011 survey of transgender individuals, 78% of the respondents reported experiencing at least one form of workplace harassment due to their gender identity.

4.) 35% of LGBT employees feel they must lie about their personal lives at work.

And a fifth of these employees say they are exhausted from having to hide their identities, while a third felt distracted from their job duties due to negative work environments.

5.) 62% of LGBT individuals hear anti-LGBT slurs and jokes in the workplace.

And only 4% speak up to a supervisor about the harassing language they hear at work. The majority of both LGBT and non-LGBT workers simply decide to ignore the offensive remarks rather than reporting the negative behavior.

6.) 43% of LGBT workers have experienced workplace discrimination.

According to the Williams Institute, these employees experienced termination, were denied promotions or were harassed due to their sexual orientation or gender identity.

7.) 14% of LGBT Americans make less than $10,000 annually.

While 5.9% of the general U.S. population makes less than $10,000 per year, 14% of LGBT individuals are within this low-income bracket.

But some things do seem to be on the upswing...

8.) 90% of Fortune 500 Companies prohibit sexual orientation discrimination.

More than 22 million people employed by publicly traded companies are protected by internal company policy from discrimination based on sexual orientation. 60 percent of these same companies prohibit workplace discrimination based on gender identity.
