Michael Jefferson, a former employee of California-based United Furniture Industries, has filed a race harassment and discrimination lawsuit against the furniture manufacturer. Jefferson, an African American man, claims to have found a doll that allegedly made him look like he was hanging from a noose.

Filed in San Bernardino County Superior Court last week, the lawsuit states that Michael Jefferson endured race harassment while working for the United Furniture Industries factory near Southern California Logistics Airport. Jefferson alleges that he was the sole black person working in his division and that the majority of his co-workers were Hispanic.

The workplace harassment and discrimination complaint also alleges that the harassment "reached a new and truly despicable level" when Jefferson shockingly found a black dummy with a beard hanging from a noose in his workstation. Jefferson also has a beard and feels the dummy was obviously directed at him.

Jefferson went directly to his supervisors about the issue who then told him that the dummy was only made in jest. The harassment complaint also states that they "did nothing to remove (Jefferson) from the hostile environment."

After informing his supervisors of the harassment, Jefferson returned to work and said he received "hostile glares" and "nasty comments" from some of his co-workers. After complaining to his supervisors again, Jefferson filed a race harassment claim with the Department of Fair Employment and Housing.

Jefferson was forced to quit his job due to the harassment because he feared coworkers would "attack" him.

A trial-setting conference has been scheduled for February.
